For those who love a small and simply community town set in agricultural landscape look no further than Lumby!
Lumby is a serene town set in a valley rich in ecological variety so extensive that it also has semi-arid areas and rainforests all in the same area. The effect is that for outdoors, Lumby is best for hiking in Okanagan highlands and Monashee Mountains, camping in the provincial parks and fishing in the Shuswap River. The ecology is also ideal for paragliders and hand gliding while for those who focus less on adrenaline their art galleries and studios to enjoy.
Lumby village was officially incorporated in 1956 though it dates to 1893 when the site was first
surveyed. It was settled in by pioneer farmers and gold miners initially which dated as far back
as 1862 during gold fever in BC. Lumby has maintained its farming and logging economic background only increasing in scale to become the logging and wood capital of North Okanagan.
There is a lot to see and do in Lumby.
One of them is enjoying the Lumby and District Museum that preserves local artifacts and houses archives. Lumby is also home to one of the largest cattle ranches in BC which is O’Keefe Ranch which is now a heritage site. The majestic mountain landscape can also be enjoyed from North America’s best accredited family resort, The Silver Star Mountain resort for nature tours, mountain biking, and in winter skiing, snowboarding, snowshoe trails and sleigh rides as well.
Lumby Golf Course is a great 9-hole course and there are 3 major parks which are the Monashee, Echo Lake and Mabel Lake provincial parks. In Lumby, biking is common from simple cruises to mountain biking while for adrenaline junkies, there is handgliding and paragliding to get an aerial view over Lumby Valley. The ecological diversity also allows for extensive wildlife viewing and birdwatching in Monashee.
