The largest town in West Lincoln, Smithville was settled in 1787 by the Griffin Family. The town was named for Griffin’s wife whose maiden name was Smith. A treadwheel was built in 1810, allowing villagers opportunity to ground their own grain provided they hitched their own oxen to the tread.
By 1849 the population had grown to 150, the post office was built and postal service began. In 1894, a rail line was approved from Toronto to Buffalo. Before construction began, one of the directors petitioned to have the railway run through Smithville instead north of the town. 1895, the railway station was built in Smithville. The station was rebuilt in 1903 after a lightning strike caused it to burn to the ground.
Smithville became a permanent police village in 1914 and was amalgamated into the West Lincoln Township in 1970.
