Elmvale was originally referred to by three different names including Elm Flats, Saurin, and Four Corners. Elmvale has flourished over the last few years, and has steadily increased in population since it was established in the mid eighteen hundreds when some settlers cleared much of the thick forest in the area to make room for their homes.
A man named Thomas Stone was the first to establish a store at the Four Corners, followed by Joseph Lambie who opened another shortly after. The Presbyterian Church was the first church in the town, and the first cemetery was placed beside it. Many of the early settlers of Elmvale remain in this cemetery, and relatives of these settlers still reside in the town today.

The Elmvale Community Arena offers plenty of skating programs from September to April each year. The arena was expanded to hold 800 spectators, has a larger ice surface, and now contains six dressing rooms. It has free family skate nights and public skating nights in addition to other programs. The ice is also available for rent.
Within the Springwater Township, there are 33 parks that are maintained for public use. At the Nursery Sports Park, there are multiple soccer fields. The multiple parks within the township also contain opportunities for tennis, baseball, picnics, boating and a boat launch, nature trails, volleyball, tobogganing and a public beach.
