The first Nations groups entered into the area and inhabited the circa 1000 BCE to 1000 CE. European settlement began in earnest when Irish immigrants entered the area in 1825. The completion of the Peterborough Lift Lock occurred in 1904 and in 1905 Peterborough, on Dominion Day, was incorporated as a city.

Peterborough’s artspace was founded in 1974 being one of the most antique of Canada’s artist-run art centers.
