Schomberg is a quaint village located in King, boasting a very family friendly, welcoming community. A great place to live, work and raise a family, this village is truly one of the hidden gems of Southern Ontario.
Each year, this proud agricultural town hosts the Schomberg Fair. This fair offers a chance for local artisans to display their work, local cooking to be served, and the talents of the youth of the town to be showcased.
Schomberg is easily accessible via Hwy 9 which links Orangeville and Newmarket and is an easy drive to both Toronto and Barrie, making it an ideal location for commuters.
If you love the outdoors, you'll love Cold Creek Conservation Area.
Cold Creek features several hiking trails that cover the Oak Ridges Moraine as well as a boreal peat bog. This ecologically diverse area is 190 hectares and part of the Humber River watershed. Spend the afternoon on the trails, observing the natural wildlife, including over 110 species of birds.
Schomberg was originally named Brownsville, as the first settlement of the area in 1830 was by the four Brown brothers from Pennsylvania. It wasn’t until until later that the village became know as Schomberg after Meinhardt Schomberg, the third Duke of Schomberg, a general serving under King William III of England.
In the early 20th century a railway was built that connected Schomberg to Toronto. It was a great way to allow people to venture into this village from the city but it was not used as much as was anticipated, and was later removed. Greater travel to and from the city, along with rapid settlement and expansion of the village took place when roads were developed, generating easier access to the village.
The goal of this museum is to preserve, interpret and celebrate all of the rich history of King Township. This museum is housed in Old Kinghorn School, which was built in 1861, and is home to over 1,800 artifacts, delicately preserved from all over the township. These artifacts include books, clothing, tools, and more. The museum also serves to display works of local artists, as well as being a host to a weekly concert that celebrates musicians from the region.
Schomberg is a very family oriented community and is a great place to raise children. Schomberg has a community centre and an arena for children and families to participate in many recreational activities.
